Rajshahi lawmakers sued for attacking BNP supporters

A case has been filed against 82 leaders and activists of the Awami League, including former MP Abul Kalam Azad, Upazila Chairman Alhaj Zakirul Islam Santu, and Taherpur Municipality Mayor Khandakar Sayla Parveen, in connection with an attack, shooting, and bomb explosions targeting BNP supporters.

The complaint was filed on Saturday night under the Explosives Act at Bagmara Police Station by Abdul Matin (32), a Jubo Dol leader of the BNP. The case names 22 individuals and includes 60 unnamed suspects. The accused Mayor Sayla Parveen is the wife of former MP Principal Abul Kalam Azad.

Abdul Matin, a resident of Khapur village in Hamirkutsa Union and a member of the Upazila BNP, claims that under the direction of MP Abul Kalam Azad, Awami League cadres severely beat BNP leader Monsur Rahman, shot him in the leg, and left him behind. Monsur narrowly escaped death and was later rescued and admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for treatment. The attackers also allegedly targeted a BNP rally, assaulting party members and causing bomb explosions.

Arbind Sarker, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bagmara Police Station, confirmed that an investigation is underway and police are actively working to apprehend the suspects. He expressed hope that the perpetrators will be arrested and brought to justice swiftly.
