Foreign Minister and Awami League Joint General Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud on Saturday urged elements, which he said include the BNP, who are fueling the quota-related movements, not to mislead the young students at the forefront.

Hasan said the government had cancelled the quota system showing sympathy to the students, but the court had reinstated it. Now the Appellate Division had put a month's stay on the reinstatement order.

"So the quota solution has to be found through the court," he added. "I will tell those who do not understand or do not want to understand this matter or who are fueling the situation, including BNP - do not mislead the young students," he said.

The minister was speaking as the chief guest at the 75th founding anniversary celebration of Bangladesh Awami League and the felicitation of the senior leaders of Bogra District Awami League and the posthumous honoring of the deceased at the Shaheed Titu Auditorium of Municipal Edward Park in Bogra town on Saturday evening.

Regarding the demand of the students for the reform of the quota system in the government jobs, the minister explained the details and said that the quota has not been restored by the government.

The government instead scrapped the quota in 2018 following student demands, Hasan said, adding that after the cancellation, quotaless recruitment has beene implemented in government and other jobs.

The High Court has ruled for the reinstatement of the quota. The Supreme Court stayed it. The matter is pending in court, and the government cannot take any decision against the judgement of the court, Hasan said.

"It should be remembered that the government cancelled the quota out of sympathy for the students. The court reinstated it. So, the quota solution has to come through the court. The government can not ignore the court and pass any decision, as the matter is sub judice," he added.

Hasan said the government is determined to take appropriate action so that the public does not suffer. "I hope the students will wait till the Supreme Court's verdict."

Referring to the country as a role model of development under the leadership of Bangladesh Awami League President Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Hasan said that the country would have progressed further in the 75 years of Awami League's bright journey if BNP had not supported the anti-Liberation and communal evil forces.

"Awami League will stand united and face all conspiracies against the country," he said, expressing his party's determination. Bogura District Awami League President Mujibur Rahman Majnu presided over the meeting while general secretary Ragebul Ahsan Ripu moderated it. Organising Secretary SM Kamal Hossain, Shahadara Mannan and Dr. Mostafa Alam Nannu also spoke.
