Hasina, family members' hidden wealth uncovered in five nations

A Joint Investigation Team probing money laundering has unearthed vast offshore wealth linked to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her family, spanning countries: the United States, United Kingdom, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and the Cayman Islands.

In a startling revelation, Chief Advisor's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam told reporters on Monday that investigators also discovered a Russian ‘slush fund’ held in a Malaysian bank under the family's name.

The crackdown has led to the confiscation of: 124 bank accounts holding over Tk 635 crore, 60 katha of prime RAJUK land, 8 luxury flats and 10 decimal land valued at Tk 8.85 crore in the country.

Six separate cases have been filed against Hasina and her family for embezzlement and fraud. Investigations completed and charge sheets submitted about the irregularities.

A travel ban has already been enforced on seven family members, as authorities tighten their net.

According to Alam, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has handed over two confidential reports to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), detailing illicit transactions. The BFIU has also frozen Tk 5.15 crore spread across 11 bank accounts connected to the family.

“These findings mark a critical turning point in the fight against high-level corruption,” Alam said during the news briefing.
