12 HC judges won't get bench

Registrar General of the Supreme Court (SC) Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan on Wednesday said 12 judges of the High Court (HC) Division will not get bench.

“Twelve justices of the High Court Division will not get any bench for now.

It means that they will not be able to take part in the judicial process after opening of the court on October 20,” he said.

He made the announcement after a meeting with the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination-Student-Movement following protests demanding immediate removal of the “partisan and corrupt” judges of the HC.

The registrar general said there is a process of resignation and removal of the justices, adding that the country currently has no law to this end.

The past government took an initiative to remove the justices through the parliament by bringing an amendment, which was later scrapped by the SC, he added.

He continued that the government has filed a review to this end which the Appellate Division of the SC led by the Chief Justice will hear on October 20.

“It has been kept as number one item (for hearing),” he said.

About the demand for resignation and removal of the justices, Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan said that the President looks after the appointment of justices and the President’s Office also looks after their transfer and removal.

“The Chief Justice and Supreme Court have done its part to this end,” he added.

Additionally, he said that the SC alone is not involved in removing the justices rather the President, Attorney General Office and Law Adviser are also involved in the process.

The Anti-Discrimination Lawyers’ Society and legal wing of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee today held demonstrations separately on the SC premises demanding removal of the “partisan and corrupt” justices.

Thousands of students under the banner of anti-discrimination student movement thronged ANEX Bhaban of the SC chanting various slogans that included “demanding execution of killer Hasina”, “Be aware about the cohorts of autocrat” and “High Court will be gheraoed” and held protest rally there.
