Joy, Palak among 39 sued over NID data leak
A case has been filed against 39 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and former State Minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Zunaid Ahmed Palak, for allegedly leaking information from National Identity (NID) cards.
Muhammad Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), confirmed the filing of the case, lodged by Mohammad Enamul Haque at Kafrul police station. The case names 19 individuals, including Joy and Palak, alongside 15-19 unnamed others, under the Cyber Security Act and sections of the Penal Code.
The case accuses Joy, the former ICT advisor, and Palak of authorizing Digicon Global Services Ltd to conduct business with multiple companies using NID information without adequate safeguards for national and personal security. The leaked NID data was reportedly sold to 182 organizations, both domestic and international, raising concerns over public security.
The complainant also alleged that the accused embezzled Tk 20,000 crore through these activities.
