Tripura's TIPRA Motha warns Bangladesh: NDTV
The TIPRA Motha, a key ally of the ruling BJP in Tripura, held a massive rally on Thursday condemning the ongoing violence against minorities and indigenous tribals in Bangladesh, NDTV reported.
The protest took place in Sabroom, a border town near the Chittagong Hill Tracts, and drew attention to what organizers called "organized attacks" that have left many indigenous people dead and hundreds homeless.
Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, founder of TIPRA Motha and a former royal of Tripura, led the rally, urging India to take diplomatic action regarding Bangladesh's failure to protect its minority communities.
Debbarma warned Bangladesh that "history could repeat itself." He drew a parallel between the current situation and the formation of Bangladesh.
"Bangladesh was created out of Pakistan, a country that failed to safeguard its minorities. If Bangladesh treats its minorities the same way, it could face a similar fate, fragmenting once again. India should not be blamed for this—Bangladesh will be solely accountable for its actions," Debbarma said.
He pointed out the recurring nature of violence in Bangladesh, which resurfaces nearly every decade, and called for urgent international intervention. Debbarma also questioned why India, which has taken strong stances on human rights violations in distant regions like Israel and Palestine, remains relatively silent on similar issues in its neighboring country.
Highlighting Tripura’s critical role in Bangladesh’s liberation from Pakistan in 1971, when the state served as a strategic base for the Mukti Bahini, Debbarma warned of emerging threats to India from elements within Bangladesh.
Hundreds of participants attended the rally, carrying banners and placards condemning the persecution of minorities and indigenous communities in Bangladesh. Protesters also called attention to recent incidents in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, where indigenous people were reportedly killed and displaced, and their homes and shops were set on fire by illegal settlers.
The rally underscored the need for India to take diplomatic action to protect the human rights of minorities and tribals in Bangladesh.
