Tensions escalate in Rangamati, Section 144 Imposed

Tensions have escalated in Rangamati, bordering the troubled district of Khagrachari, following violent clashes and counter-clashes that have left one person dead and at least fifty others injured.

Dr. Sadia Akhtar, on duty at Rangamati General Hospital, confirmed the fatality, although the identity of the deceased has not yet been revealed.

In response to the unrest, District Commissioner Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Khan imposed Section 144 in the Rangamati municipal area to restore order.

Local sources reported that tensions flared on Friday morning after a protest march by students in Rangamati, organized in response to an attack in Dighinala, Khagrachari. As the march reached Bonorupa market, rumors spread across the town, sparking panic among residents. Several businesses in the market were attacked, and some establishments were set on fire during the chaos.

The unrest follows clashes that erupted on Thursday, September 19, between the indigenous population and Bengali settlers in Dighinala. The violence destabilized the area and led to incidents of arson, including the destruction of at least 60 shops at Larma Square.
