BNP demands reconstitution of EC, ACC
The BNP has called for the reconstitution of the Election Commission (EC) and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), alleging that these institutions are still under the influence of appointees from the ousted Sheikh Hasina government. During a press briefing, BNP standing committee member AZM Zahid Hossain claimed that individuals backed by Hasina continue to hold key positions in these constitutional bodies, thereby undermining their impartiality.
Zahid emphasized the urgency of restructuring both the EC and the ACC, arguing that they remain compromised by the previous government's loyalists. He criticized the current EC as a "puppet" and "partisan" body that facilitated electoral manipulations to cement Hasina's power, urging its members to resign to avoid public outrage.
The BNP leader also accused the ACC of being filled with relatives and allies of the former Awami League government, who were allegedly installed to target opposition leaders and suppress dissent. Zahid urged the interim government to overhaul the ACC, emphasizing the need for a transparent and accountable body that could effectively address corruption and recover money laundered abroad during the past 16 years.
He reiterated that as a government formed from a student-led mass movement, the interim administration has a duty to restore integrity to these institutions. Zahid also highlighted the BNP's ongoing efforts to provide relief to flood-affected people, noting that the party has distributed over 13 crore taka in aid.
