Interim govt aims to overhaul power sector, probes irregularities

Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, Adviser for Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources in the interim government, has announced plans to reconstruct the power sector to eliminate existing irregularities.

A committee will be formed to investigate allegations of corruption within the sector, Khan said during an exchange meeting with officials at the Rupsa 800 MW Combined Cycle Power Plant in Khalishpur, Khulna, this morning.

"This is a new Bangladesh, where everyone has equal opportunities. While there are risks, there are also solutions," Khan stated.

The adviser noted that the prevailing narrative of Bangladesh's economic progress—marked by rising per capita income and GDP growth—now appears to be misleading. "A development story was being told, but it now seems that much of it was false," he said.

Khan cited the example of a power plant in Khulna built at a cost of around Tk 8,000 crore, which was added to the national GDP. "Even if the GDP increases, this gas-based power plant does not seem able to generate electricity immediately. Tk 8,000 crore was spent, but people are not getting any benefit from it. This is the fallacy of development," he added.
