Interim govt ends black money whitening scheme
The interim government has decided to abolish the provision allowing the whitening of black money as part of its broader reforms across various sectors.
The decision was made during the weekly Council of Advisers meeting held at the state guesthouse Jamuna on Thursday, chaired by Chief Adviser Prof. Yunus.
"A clear decision has been made to end this practice. We are taking a stand against the provision of whitening black money," stated Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser on Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, during a briefing following the meeting.
The government emphasized that moral considerations outweigh the benefits of any revenue generated through the black money whitening scheme.
Previously, Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) had criticized the 'unethical' provision in the recently announced budget, which allowed black money to be legalized under the guise of undisclosed income. The anti-corruption body warned that the 15 percent tax on such legalized income could undermine the efforts of honest taxpayers, as the provision ensured no scrutiny of the declared assets or money.
