The recent floods have inflicted substantial damage on Bangladesh's fisheries and livestock sectors, resulting in losses exceeding Tk 2,000 crore, according to Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter. She disclosed these figures during a briefing at the Secretariat on Sunday, where she addressed the flood's impact and outlined necessary response measures.
The adviser urged businesses not to raise prices of essential commodities such as milk and eggs, despite the temporary supply disruptions caused by the floods. The livestock sector has suffered losses amounting to Tk 411 crore across 12 districts, while the fisheries sector has incurred damage worth Tk 1,590 crore, she reported.
To support those affected, she announced that loans would be offered to farmers and entrepreneurs under favorable conditions. Additionally, she advised NGOs to temporarily suspend loan collections in flood-affected areas to ease the financial strain on impacted communities.
The adviser also assured that the ministry is closely monitoring the situation to prevent any artificial price hikes in milk and eggs.
