Interim govt criticizes Hasina's statements from India as detrimental to bilateral ties
The interim government has formally communicated its concerns to India regarding recent statements made by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, describing them as “not conducive” to enhancing bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India.
The issue was raised during a meeting between Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma and Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday.
“Regarding former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s recent statements, the adviser noted that such remarks originating from India are not helpful in fostering better bilateral ties,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
The adviser also pointed to what he described as a “highly exaggerated” media campaign in India about the situation in Bangladesh. He emphasized that the interim government's priority is to restore law and order and revive the economy. The government is focused on meaningful reforms and lasting transformations to meet the aspirations of the people, especially the youth, Hossain added.
Hossain reiterated the interim government’s commitment to transitioning towards an inclusive and pluralistic democracy, ensuring an environment conducive to free, fair, and participatory elections. He also expressed gratitude to the Indian government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their support and well wishes towards Bangladesh's Chief Adviser.
In response, High Commissioner Verma congratulated Hossain on his new role and reaffirmed India’s eagerness to collaborate with the interim government to achieve the shared aspirations of both nations. He reiterated Prime Minister Modi’s commitment to working closely with Bangladesh during this transitional period.
Hossain further assured the Indian envoy of the interim government’s dedication to maintaining peaceful coexistence among all communities in Bangladesh, including minorities.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina, through her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, recently condemned the "acts of sabotage, arson, and violence" that have claimed the lives of innocent citizens since last July.
