Hasina sued in murder case over Mohammadpur police shooting
Ousted Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, along with former ministers Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan, and several others, have been named in a murder case filed over the killing of Abu Sayeed, a grocery store owner, in a police shooting in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area on July 19.
The case was voluntarily filed by Amir Hamza, a businessman from Mohammadpur’s Adabor area, in the Court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury on Tuesday, as confirmed by his lawyer, Manun Mia.
Other named defendants in the case include former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former Additional Commissioner of the Detective Branch (DB) Harun Or Rashid, former Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Habibur Rahman, and former DMP Joint Commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarker.
According to the lawsuit, Abu Sayeed was killed around 4:00 pm on July 19, when police allegedly fired indiscriminately at students and civilians during the quota reform protests. The police shooting was purportedly carried out under orders from the IGP and the then-home minister.
The victim's family, who resides in Boda upazila, Panchagarh district, is reportedly unable to pursue legal action over Abu Sayeed’s death.
The case also includes charges against several unnamed high-ranking police and government officials, according to lawyer Manun Miah.
