BGB detains ex-SBAC Chairman and Barishal AL Leader at Satkhira Border
The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained S.M. Amjad Hossain, the former chairman of South Bangla Agriculture and Commerce Bank, as he attempted to illegally cross into India through the Bhomra border in Satkhira.
Amjad Hossain was apprehended on Thursday night along with Nirob Hossain, also known as Khora Tutul, a leader of the Awami League's Barishal city unit. Tutul holds the position of Industries and Commerce Secretary in the party's Barishal unit.
Lt. Col Ashraful Haque, the commanding officer of the BGB's 33rd Battalion in Satkhira, confirmed the detentions. He mentioned that the BGB had received intelligence indicating that individuals accused of terrorism, drug trafficking, extortion, corruption, and other criminal activities might attempt to flee to India through the Bhomra immigration checkpoint. In response, security measures at the border were heightened.
Nirob Hossain was detained as he was about to cross into India, followed by the detention of Amjad Hossain later in the afternoon. Amjad is currently under investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for amassing assets worth hundreds of crores of taka. His assets reportedly include multiple properties in the United States, as well as significant wealth in Belgium, France, Singapore, Russia, and India.
