Army chief to address the nation as people march towards Dhaka

Chief of Army Staff Gen Waker-Uz-Zaman is set to address the nation on the ongoing situation across Bangladesh. The army chief will make his statement at 4 pm today, according to the Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR).

Earlier in the day, the ISPR announced that the address would take place at 2 pm, but it was later rescheduled at 3pm. The ISPR has called for everyone to be patient until the address.

At the time of this report, the army chief was holding meetings with leaders of various political parties to form a national government, source said.

Senior Co-Chairman of Jatiya Party Anisul Islam Mahmud and Secretary General of the party Mujibul Haque Chunnu are present in the meeting with the Army Chief at the army headquarters. Asif Nazrul, Professor of Law Department of Dhaka University, is also participating in the meeting.

Meanwhile, millions of protesters from across the country are marching towards Dhaka to topple dictator Sheikh Hasina.

The country has been engulfed by massive protests and violence that began last month after student protesters demanded the scrapping of a controversial quota system in public jobs.

At least 100 people were killed and thousands injured on Sunday in a wave of violence across the country as police and ruling party goons shot at the people, mostly students.

Starting Sunday evening, a nationwide curfew has been imposed.
