Nationwide student protests resume despite heavy police presence
Students across the country have resumed their protests as part of a pre-scheduled event, defying a heavy presence of law enforcement agencies. On Monday noon at Dhaka’s Purana Paltan, police detained several protesters who were staging a demonstration. The protesters rallied against the detention of seven coordinators of the quota reform movement by the Detective Branch (DB) of police and the "pressure to withdraw their ongoing movement."
Additional gatherings of protesters were reported at Mirpur 10 intersection and Rajshahi University. On Sunday night, Nahid Islam, a coordinator of the quota reform movement, announced in a video message while under DB custody the withdrawal of their protest program. Despite this announcement, students from several universities, including Dhaka University, issued statements vowing to continue their protests until their nine-point demands are met.
Meanwhile, Rajshahi University students blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway on Monday to press home their nine-point demand, including a proper investigation and trial for those responsible for the deaths during the quota reform protests last week. The protesting students staged demonstrations in front of the main gate of the university and later took positions on the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway, halting traffic.
The students said they paraded different roads with a procession adjacent to the campus and then staged demonstrations, as reported by our correspondent from the spot. They vowed to continue their movement until their demands are met.
The BGB and police are on high alert, with members of law enforcement agencies seen at various points in the city. In another incident, police dispersed students who had taken positions at ECB Chattar in Mirpur on Monday noon, protesting the recent deaths during the student movement and calling for the release of people arrested by law enforcement agencies. The students began their demonstrations around 12 pm, and police dispersed them around 12:30 pm, according to our reporter from the scene. The protesters then took positions in different alleys.
Additionally, police obstructed protesters at Mirpur-10 when they attempted to bring out a procession around 12:30 pm. Members of BGB, police, and the army have taken positions at different points throughout the city.
