Bangladesh authorities hide real death figures

The autoritity in Bangladesh has resorted to a clever way of hiding the actual number of people killed by the law enforcement agencies and rulling Awami League’s henchmen, reveals an investigation of the Mirror Asia.

The investigation also found that the law enforcement agencies took away the death registration form from Dhaka's top hospitals. A team of Mirror Asia correspondents visited several top hospitals and spoke to hospital staffers on Monday and Tuesday.

Some 370 dead bodies were brought to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in two days—Thursday and Friday, according to them.

“The law enforcement agencies barred the hospital staffers from registering more dead bodies and took away other records,” said a staff requesting not to be named.

Until Tuesday, 50 bodies were left unidentified at the DMCH, he said, adding that three dead bodies aged between 8 and 12 were brought in from Jatrabari, the hottest spot of the protests.

“Those children were inside their respective houses. But the bullets fired by police, BGB and RAB ripped through their bodies,” said the mother of the eight-year-old dead child who received a bullet in her left hand.

At Mitford Hospital, 450 dead bodies were first registered but the law enforcement agencies were able to delete the registration as they took away the registration forms, according to the hospital staffers. “There was no space in the hospital to accommodate the dead bodies that were poured in huge numbers,” said the staff.

Uttara’s Kuwait Moitree Hospital received 60, and Jatrabari Anabil Hospital 39 in the two days. The hospital authorities gave up to count the bodies at one point as they were overwhelmed with the huge number of dead bodies.  Mugda Hospital did not make any list of deaths. In the last six days to Tuesday, the official figure is put at 197—far below from the unofficial figure.

The people, mostly students, were killed and thousands critically injured in five days until Tuesday by the law enforcement agencies and activists of Awami League, according to the media and protesters. The journalists are restricted to enter the hospitals to hide the accurate body counts.
