Protester Sayeed, shot dead by police, buried in Rangpur

The burial of Abu Sayeed (25), a coordinator of the ongoing quota reform movement at Begum Rokeya University, who was killed yesterday when police fired rubber bullets, has been completed.

His janaza was held at Jafarpur Madrasa field in Babunpur village of Madankhali union in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur on Wednesday morning. Later, he was laid to rest in the family graveyard. Abu Saeed's relative, Md. Siam Mia, led the funeral prayer. Earlier, around 2 am on Wednesday, his body arrived at his village. When the body reached the village, a heart-wrenching scene unfolded. 

Abu Saeed's father, Mokbul Hossain, is a day laborer by profession. Abu Sayeed was extremely talented from a young age. He was the youngest of nine siblings. His parents and siblings had sky-high dreams centered around him. Sayeed was beloved by everyone in the village due to his intellect and behavior.

His mother, Monowara Begum, has become shell shocked, crying incessantly over the loss of her son. Abu Sayeed received a scholarship in the fifth grade from the local government primary school. He passed SSC from Khalashpir Dimukhi High School with a GPA-5.

He passed HSC from Rangpur Government College with a GPA-5 as well. He enrolled in the English department at Begum Rokeya University. Locals believe that if he had lived, Abu Sayeed would have achieved great things in life and made significant contributions to his family and the area.

It is to be noted that on Tuesday (July 15) noon, the students participating in the ongoing quota movement at Rangpur Begum Rokeya University marched from the Lalbagh area of the city towards the campus. When they tried to enter the campus, police obstructed them. At one point, a clash occurred between the police and the students. The police then fired rubber bullets at the students. Abu Sayeed was killed in the incident.
