DU declared closed amid quota protests

Dhaka University (DU) has been declared closed for an indefinite period 'for students' safety and ensuring peaceful academic environment' considering the emerging situation. 

A media release, signed by Mahmud Alam, director at the Public Relations Office of the university, said the university's syndicate committee has taken the decision from an emergency meeting with Vice Chancellor Prof Dr SM Maksud Kamal in the chair.

The students have been asked to vacate the dormitories by 6pm on Wednesday and subsequently the students will be allowed to enter the dormitories upon allotment of seats on the basis of the merit when the halls will be opened, it said

The students and teachers, who were injured during the clashes, will be given necessary treatment assistance, it reads.

The university authorities have urged the government to resolve the quota issue in a rational way, it added.

The university authorities paid profound respect to the people who died centring the quota reform movement and expressed sympathy to the bereaved families.
