Universities closed after violent quota protests

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has closed all public and private campuses across Bangladesh following deadly student protests demanding reforms to government job quotas.

In addition to universities, the government has ordered the closure of medical, textile, engineering, and other colleges affiliated with these institutions until further notice, according to a UGC notice issued on Tuesday night.

For their safety, students have been instructed to vacate residence halls and remain in secure locations.

The UGC has made the decision hours after at least six people died and scores sustained injuries in clashes between the quota protesters, police and Bangladesh Chhatra League members across the country.
