Ex-AL MP among 77 accused as PBI reopens 2013 BNP activist's murder

A case was filed accusing 77 Awami League (AL) men including former lawmaker Shahdab Akbar Chowdhury Labu in a case over the killing of the BNP's voluntary wing Swechasebak Dal leader in a tripartite clash among BNP, AL and police in Faridpur's Nagarkanda upazila around 11 years back.

Saleha Begum Sale, 64, mother of the former Swechasebak Dal member Maruf Sheikh of the upazila unit, filed the case with the court of a Faridpur court on Tuesday afternoon, said the plaintiff's lawyer AKM Habibur Rahman Hafiz.

Taking the allegations into cognizance, the court ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation to probe but it didn't set any timeframe to submit a report.

The accused also included Nagarkanda upazila's Awami General Secretary Jamal Hossain Mia, his brother and local UP chairman Kamal Hossain Mia and former Nagarkanda municipality Jubo League conveyer Kamruzzaman Mithu, among others.

Moreover, some 50 to 60 people were unnamed in the case.

According to the case deposition, the pro-AL supporters swooped on a BNP procession brought out in favour of a countrywide strike in Nagarkanda upazila on October 23, 2013. The impact of the incident left Maruf killed.

Though the family members of the victim went to the concerned police station, they expressed reluctance saying that a case was already filed by police in this regard.

In the case, 146 BNP and Hefazat-e-Islam men were sued and they were blamed for the murder.
