HC issues rule on posthumous honorific for those who sacrificed lives

The High Court on Tuesday issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why the deceased, killed during the anti-discrimination student movement from July 16 to August 5, should not be declared as 'Jatiyo Bir'.
 
The HC bench of Justice Md Kamrul Hossain Mollah and Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque issued the rule after hearing a writ petition.
 
The HC also issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why the victims injured in the movement should not be recognized as 'freedom fighter' and should not be awarded the facilities enjoyed by the freedom fighters of 1971.
 
It also issued another rule asking the government to explain as to why the families of the deceased, who died during the 2024 mass upsurge, should not be provided compensation.
 
Secretaries to the Cabinet Division, Liberation War Affairs Ministry and other officials concerned have been made respondent to the rule.
 
Advocate Joynul Abedin, Advocate Raihan Alam and Zakia Humaira Toma stood for the petitioner.
 
Ali Najer, a resident of Cantonment area of Dhaka filed the writ petition.
