Govt to sell 52 duty-free luxurious cars of former MPs: Salehuddin

Adviser to the interim government on the Ministries of Finance and Commerce Dr Salehuddin Ahmed today said the interim government has decided to sell 52 luxurious cars imported for former members of the now dissolved 12th Jatiya Sangsad.

"The cars are yet to be released from ports," the adviser told journalists after a meeting with businessmen at the Bangladesh Secretariat in the city.

The government will collect customs tax by selling these cars, which were imported before the ouster of the Awami League-led government earlier this month.

The National Board of Revenue has been ordered to sell the cars.

Salehuddin said the duty-free cars, imported for former MPs and stuck at the port, will not be sent back. Bangladesh will lose revenue if they are sent back.

According to people familiar with today's meeting, most of the cars are from the Toyota brand's Land Cruiser series.

The cars will be sold on easy terms at market price.
