4 top BB officials quit over $30m allegation involving Salman F Rahman

Four senior officials of Bangladesh Bank (BB) resigned on Monday after allegations surfaced that they facilitated a $30 million transfer to Salman F Rahman from the Export Development Fund (EDF) on August 4.

The officials who stepped down are Deputy Governors Kazi Sayedur Rahman and Khurshid Alam, Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) Chief Masud Biswas, and Central Bank Policy Advisor Abu Farah Md Nasser.

Mohiuddin Rony, coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement, issued an ultimatum demanding their resignation by 1 pm today on behalf of the students. Following this demand, the officials submitted their resignation letters to the Financial Institution Division (FID) secretary at noon.

The students accused the officials of being complicit in the unauthorized release of $30 million from the EDF, allegedly benefiting Salman F Rahman, a prominent figure and owner of Beximco Group. The officials tendered their resignations shortly after the ultimatum was issued.

Mohiuddin Rony further claimed that Salman F Rahman had effectively "stolen" the $30 million from the EDF. He warned that if individuals with such connections continue to control the central bank, public funds would be at risk of being looted again, potentially leading to further instability in the country.
